3 AASECT + 3 EDSE CEs

This workshop is part of the Everyone Deserves Sex Therapy (EDST) certification program and also open to all mental health, sexuality, and other care professionals!

Socially and culturally constructed concepts of gender have existed for centuries, each with norms, roles, and presentations that commonly featured numerous fluid genders. Many were celebrated and even worshipped as divine! Despite this historic record, most modern representations of gender - including those upheld in clinical and academic settings - center one skewed depiction of gender: the colonial-era binary of boy/girl, man/woman.

The Gender Galaxy is for progressive professionals seeking to build an understanding of gender that more accurately reflects the expansiveness of the human experience while dismantling harmful stereotypes rooted in white supremacy, anti-Black racism, and patriarchy. As gender becomes even more heavily policed and politicized institutionally and online, it is more important than ever for mental health practitioners, sexuality professionals, clinicians, and care providers to confidently support and advocate for their trans, gender-expansive, and gender-creative clients.

By the end of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Define gender and cisnormativity using expansive language

  • Discuss the difference between gender, gender expression, and gender expectations

  • Identify at least three examples of gender-affirming care

  • Identify at least one culture in which gender fluidity is considered “natural”

  • Examine the roles white supremacy and colonization played in the development and enforcement of the gender binary

This course is open to all sexuality professionals. It is required for those completing the EDST Sex Therapy Certification.

This course meets the requirements of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and is approved for 3 CE credits. These CE credits may be applied toward AASECT certification and renewal of certification. Completion of this program does not ensure or guarantee AASECT certification.
